NDL Trains Employees on Ethanol Safety Data Sheet Communication and Interpretation


As a safety-conscious organisation, the Management of Nosak Distilleries Limited organized the first quarter workshop on Health Safety and Environment (HSE). The theme of the workshop, “Ethanol Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Communication and Interpretation” follows Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard.

The training was centered on three OSHA standards, which include OSHA 1910.1200 (a)(1). This seeks to ensure that the hazards of all chemicals produced or imported are classified, and that information concerning the classified hazards is transmitted to employers and employees. The transmittal of information is to be accomplished by means of comprehensive hazard communication programs, which are to include container labeling and other forms of warning, safety data sheets, and employee training.

While OSHA 1910.1200(a)(2) dealing with occupational safety and health standard is intended to address comprehensively the issue of classifying the potential hazards of chemicals and communicating information concerning hazards and appropriate protective measures to employees and preempt any legislative or regulatory enactments of a state, or political subdivision of a state, pertaining to this subject.

OSHA 1910.1200 (b)(3)(ii) states that ‘Employers shall maintain any safety data sheets that are received with incoming shipments of hazardous chemicals and ensure that they are readily accessible during each work-shift to laboratory employees when they are in their work areas.

Delivering his presentation at the workshop, HSE Manager of Nosak Distilleries Limited, Okudor Sheriff Ovie charged employees to imbibe the OSHA standards in their daily work shifts to guard against hazardous occurrence at the workplace.
